Trip planning platform

Personal project, 2023

Role - UX researcher | UI/UX designer

Tools - Figma

Planning a trip can be real fun but also
a bit overwhelming.
The process of creating a trip itinerary
from scratch can consume a significant amount of time, especially if you don’t
have adequate knowledge about the
place you’re traveling to.

When you start planning a trip
you'll probably:

01 Try to get to know the place using
Google maps and figuring out what
to do and where to go

02 Compare prices on dozens of flights
and hotels booking websites

03 Buy tickets for various attractions
ahead of time

04 Read travel blogs and reviews

05 Set a budget and try to stick to it

06 Browse social media for inspiration

07 Collect bits of information from
different sources and try to make
sense of it all

Wow, even if you enjoy planning,
that's a lot!

What if we?

01 Create a web platform that helps
users plan their trips from A to Z
in an easy, efficient and
enjoyable manner

02 Encourage the users to do all the
planning and purchases within the
platform and making it worthwhile
not to close the tab and wander to
external platforms by providing a
unified solution and reliable
detailed information

The idea

Meet TripLit – A one-stop shop that
offers a new and exciting way to plan
an awesome trip.

Design process

I conducted an online survey to gain
deeper understanding about the ways
users plan and document their trips
and to discover their motivations, goals
and needs and frustrations during

this process.

Getting to know
the users

Some of the questions that were asked:

On-line research

Who am I designing for?

Personas

I created two personas based on two
distinct approaches for traveling and
levels of planning:
users who prefer to travel more freely and leave some room for improvisation and
users who are highly organized and prefer
to have all the details and intricacies of
their trip nailed down in advance.

Getting to know
the competition

There are many trip planning platforms out there. Many are well known for travelers, some less.

The competitor analysis focused on platforms that enable itinerary planning
(in contrast to bookings-oriented
platforms) and it was conducted to learn which features already exist on those platforms and to detect unmet user
needs that TripLit can capitalize on to
have a leg up over them.

Research insights -
Must-have features

After the discovery of the fundamental users needs and following the
competitor analysis,
I set the must-have features of TripLit
and started to examine some ideas
for their visual design.

TripLit enables the users to make their own travel itinerary and track it both in a day-by day view and in calendar view (for their preference). The users can easily
add, remove or change the date and time of their chosen activities.

Travel itinerary

TripLit has a built–in budget tracker feature. Users can track their travel expenses anywhere, anytime – while planning and on location. They can easily set their own budget limit, add planned expenses and add ones on the go, attach expenses to a specific category, see at a glance how much they’ve already spent and export their budget to a PDF file.

Budget tracker

Users can read other travelers reviews and recommendations about attractions, activities, restaurants and accommodations and can add such themselves. They can also get inspired by travel vloggers and other travelers short videos that capture their impression about attractions, accommodations and restaurants, as seen on varies social media platforms.

Other travelers reviews & videos

As a one-stop-shop platform, TripLit enables users to make all their bookings and reservations (flights, accommodations, attractions, activities, and restaurants) and offers a huge amount of information.
To ease the process the user goes through in every step of his planning journey, in every page there's a distinct nav that displays icons that scroll to the specific information the user seeks - both at the top of the page and on the side.

to reach his goal when interacting

Final thoughts

Until recently, I was employed as a Content Team Lead at a travel tech company
that offered a unique travel tool which generates personalized travel routes based
on users personal preferences and interests.

Regrettably, the company did not meet its business objectives and subsequently
ceased operations.

Although my role was solely focused on content, I did have the opportunity to learn
about the product strategy, its ins and outs, where it was effective and where it fell short.

The idea for TripLit came about after identifying the potential opportunities of the
company's product and the will to out-perform it.

During my market research process, I've learned that the travel planning market is
saturated with various platforms, some of which are prominent among travelers, while
others remain lesser known. My research uncovered the user needs that have yet to be met -
as some essential features are in use in some platforms while others lacked them.

My goal was to create a one-stop web platform that helps users plan exceptional trips,
by utilizing all these essential features, such as customized itineraries, expense tracking,
bookings, etc. - without overwhelming the users and providing them with easy-to-use
interfaces and quick access to information.

To simplify navigation while providing an extensive repository of information each page
of TripLit features a clear and unique icons navigation bar that allow users to quickly jump
to the information they need, located at both the top and side of the page.

Furthermore, TripLit distinguishes itself by integrating two novel components absent
in most planning tools but highly sought after by users. Firstly, it assimilates videos from
other travelers, offering real-life insights and inspiration. Secondly, it provides users with
the ability to book various travel services —flights, lodgings, attractions tickets, and more—
without leaving the platform, keeping all reservations in one place.

From my personal standpoint, this holistic approach positions TripLit as the ideal and
complete travel planning solution.
