Raising a dragon is an amazing life experience, but it also takes a lot of work and responsibility to train him to function harmoniously in a human household.

For some reason there is currently no
online platform that helps dragon owners with this process.

So how can dragon owners train them
and know they are on the right track?

How can they?

01 Train their dragon from the most
basic commands and keep track
of their training sessions

02 Better understand the needs of
their new dragon and reach their
specific goals

03 Become more educated on dragons
body language and behavior

What if we?

01 Create an app that helps users that
are new to dragons developmental
stages and behavior to train their
new dragon in a simple and
enjoyable manner

02 Encourage users to stay motivated
and maintain a stress-free training
routine with their dragons

Design process

Who am I designing for?

Personas

From the initial research results I learned
more about the potential users, their
goals and needs, their frustrations and
the tasks they must complete.

I narrowed the scope of the user base to
target two different personas: users who
are new owners and users who are
raising a baby dragon.

I had a bit of a problem reaching out
and finding dragon owners in my social circle, so to help inform my perspective
I decided to research slightly similar and more approachable creatures – dogs.

I sent out an online user surveys to friends and acquaintances to find users that met the pre-screening criteria: owning a dog and a desire for at home dog training.

* For the purpose of this case study, I changed
the word "dog" to "dragon"

Users research key insights

Getting to know
the competition

As I mentioned before, for some reason
there are currently no dragons training
apps in the market.

I decided to explore top rated dogs
training apps in order to understand
the standards and key features of
somewhat similar industry.

Research insights -
Must-have features

After the discovery of the fundamental users needs and following the similar market research, I set the must-have features of dragonly and started
to examine some ideas for their
visual design.

Dragonly offers a personalized training program based on the user's initial and specific goals. In order to create the program the user goes through a quick questionnaire when onboarding the app for the first time

Personalized training program

Dragonly offers step-by-step tasks
instructions with visual support and
a built-in clicker

Lessons and instructions

Users can join an in-app community
(similar to other social media platforms)
and connect with other dragon owners
on the platform to share their
experiences and progress

community

Dragonly offers access to various
educational articles to help owners
learn about dragons body language
and behavior

Information

Users can set daily or weekly reminders
to help them stay focused on their training goals and stay motivated.
Furthermore, users can mark the
status of a particular task (not learned >
in progress > learned) to encourage
them to proceed and accomplish the task

Training schedule

Dragonly includes a progress tracker
to see where the user and his dragon
are on their training journey and a
unique measurement tool to track the dragon’s growth

Progress tracker

The idea

Dragonly is a mobile platform that aims
to enhance the mutual relationship between dragons and their owners.

Dragonly's goal is to help dragon owners become better trainers by providing them a simple tool to structure and maintain a personalized training program with easy-to-follow tutorials, offers them useful information and lets them communicate and share their experiences with other dragon owners – all from the comfort
of their phone.

Final thoughts

Training a dragon is a challenging endeavor. Dragons are intelligent and powerful creatures with
abilities such as flight and fire-breathing, which require specialized knowledge and skills to manage.

Bear in mind that every dragon is unique, and patience is key. Training takes time, and it's important
to respect the dragon's individual personality and limits.

My goal was to help dragon owners enhance their training skills by offering a simple tool that
organizes and sustains a tailored training program.

As I encountered challenges in connecting with dragon owners within my network for my user
research, I decided to broaden my understanding by exploring dog owners, as they share some fundamental needs when it comes to caring for and training their pets, although they are dealing
with very different creatures.

Dragonly is designed with the user’s needs in mind, offering several features that make dragon
training more accessible and enjoyable, and encourages users to continue training their
dragons effectively.

Users can easily explore the app with a clear and simple menu structure, customize the app
based on the dragon's age and training goals, track their dragon's progress over time with
visual indicators, schedule and plan training sessions and set reminders, share their progress
within the app's community, and deepen their understanding of dragon training through a
collection of step-by-step guides, video tutorials, articles, and tips.

What’s next?

As I move on from this project, my dedication to improving the user experience remains continual.

I’ve introduced Dragonly to a select group of friends who represent my target users, inviting
them to explore the prototype and provide their feedback. The valuable feedback gathered
from these user testing sessions has opened up opportunities for a range of exciting new
features that could be integrated into the product. These enhancements are designed
to boost functionality and enrich the overall user experience:

1. Gamification - Incorporating elements like badges, points, or levels to motivate users
and make training more enjoyable.

2. Live Feedback – Providing real-time feedback on the training, allowing users to correct
techniques and improve their skills on the spot.

3. Community Growth - Adding social features that enable users to connect and share
experiences on other social networks (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.) in addition to
the in-app community feature.
